RAB NE BANA DI JODI

Release date: 12th December 2008

Cast: Anushka Sharma, Shah Rukh Khan

Director: Aditya Chopra

Run time: 2hrs 52mins

Rating: 7.2/10

Shah Rukh Khan plays Surinder Sahni, a working-class simpleton from Amritsar who goes in for an image makeover, and poses as a cooler, trendier fellow so he can woo his young, distracted wife Taani (played by newcomer Anushka Sharma). Picked to be partners in a local dance contest, the lady and her husband-in-disguise, Raj, become fast friends, until she finds herself falling for him.

To be honest, even if you are willing to buy into that bizarre premise – that Taani fails to recognize her own husband because he’s shaved his moustache, lost the spectacles and picked a funky hairstyle – Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is still an exhausting watch because it’s such a predictable story, because it recycles the same old clichés, and because the characters are so poorly developed.

It’s difficult to get your head around Taani, easily the film’s most confusing character, who takes the drastic step of marrying a man she doesn’t love on the urging of her deathbed-bound father, when her fiancé is killed in a road accident. Never once does she remember or refer to either her fiancé or her father in the film. She’s progressive enough to think it’s cool to be having gol-gappa eating matches with a male friend, but conveniently forgets to tell him she’s married.

Newcomer Anushka Sharma appears confident, and is well cast as the spirited Taani, but saddled with an inconsistent character she fails to leave a lasting impression. The same, thankfully can’t be said forVinay Pathak, who’s absolutely delightful as Suri’s faithful friend Bobby.
Chopra’s return to direction after eight years is marked by a flawed script, which in turn spawns a disappointing film. Where’s the smart dialogue and the spirited characters that defined his debut film,Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge? There’s no trace of either in this film.

War

Release date : 2nd October, 2019

Cast : Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff

Director : Siddharth Anand

War is a 2019 Hindi-language action thriller, and follows an Indian soldier assigned to eliminate his former mentor and he must keep his wits about him if he is to be successful in his mission. When the two men collide, it results in a barrage of battles and bullets. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, with praise for the performances of Roshan and Shroff and the action sequence, but criticism for its predictable storyline. For those that will buy a ticket simply to gawk at the collective handsomeness of its leading men, War gives you your money’s worth. It’s an interesting premise, but the director, who has also co-written the film’s story and screenplay, seems ill-equipped to build on it. Much of the movie plays out like a cat-and-mouse chase across slick foreign locations.

This movie is very relatable to all generations of audiences. This film is literally all in its writing and at the same time the performers collectively shine. This movie is all about how college was… And how simple life was. How even little things made us very happy. This film is purely reserved for carefree college and hostel days. It is a bittersweet ,heart warming Dramedy . I know — nostalgia’s an exaggeration and all that. But this is the kind of writing/film that genuinely makes you want to relive — in this case, go back to college. Great movie with a great story and message. Funny, Touching and very Relatable. KABIR SINGH

Release date: 21st June 2019

Cast: Shahid kapoor, Kiara advani

Director: Sandeep Reddy Vanga

Run time: 2hrs 52mins

Rating: 4.8/5

Kabir Singh(a living it like it is Shahid Kapoor) a post graduate Medical student from Delhi Institute of Medical Sciences revels in excess. In an inter-collegiate football match, he prefers to use his fists rather than foot, to prove a point to his opponents. The opponent is left shell-hocked and bloodied and vows revenge. Cut to a scene where a fresh batch of MBBS entrants are being ragged by their seniors. Peachy punjaban Preeti Sikka (a demure tongue-tied Kiara Advani) catches Kabir’s eye and he instantly lays claim to her as his possession. Preeti has nothing to say and even her anxious father is shown seeking Kabir’s father’s (Suresh Oberoi) help in saving his daughter’s blushes from that of heartless raggers. Little does he know that he has served his daughter up as fresh meat for the lion in his very den. It’s a classic Stockholm syndrome set-up where the captive falls for her captor. Can this be called love?

For most of the narrative we see his parents condone his extreme behaviour, his college Dean(Adil Hussain) and associated staffers pat him on the back rather than rusticate him from the Institute, his older brother Karan(Arjan Bajwa) look on his excesses with a ‘Men will be men’ benevolence, his nursing assistants pander to his every whim, and his best friend Shiva(Soham Majumdar) sacrifice his own career ambitions to lend him the incessant back-up support needed to keep this abusive addict and bully out of the crosshairs of justified retribution. The message being sent down is that if you are a meritorious top-ranking student then everything else, character flaws, criminality et al can be overlooked. In fact, it takes more than three-fourths of the trying, energy sapping runtime to provoke a conscience within Kabir and make him willingly surrender to the consequences of his actions. But by then it’s already too late for the unreasonable film and its shell-shocked audience.

Udta Punjab

Release date : 17th June, 2016

Cast : Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, Diljit Dosanjh

Director : Abhishek Chaubey

Udta Punjab is a 2016 Indian black comedy crime film. It is loosely based on and revolves around the drug abuse by the youth population in the Indian state of Punjab and the various conspiracies surrounding it. Chaubey uses a part-documentary-part-mainstream approach here. Post interval, the film is sometimes too indulgent and sluggish. Also this is not your sunny-side up cinema. It is stark and makes you cringe. However, its victory lies in making you empathise with its characters. As Alia and Shahid, both victims of drug and physical abuse fight their demons and destinies, you shed a silent tear. The impact is such that it will stay with you even when you leave the theatre.
